People often say “Information security doesn’t solve a real problem.” But let’s flip that—what does the tech industry really solve?
Every single company today is screaming about AI security—how it’s a massive concern, how they’re “solving” it. But let’s be real: companies have been getting hacked for decades, and they will continue to get hacked. Why? Because nobody cares about the basics. Security fundamentals are “boring,” so they get ignored in favor of whatever’s trending.
And trends? They’re dictated by funding pressures. Startups can only attract investment if they chase the latest shiny thing. VCs don’t want to hear about “We patched our servers and enforced MFA”. They want AI, blockchain, quantum security—whatever fits the narrative of the quarter. It’s not about solving problems; it’s about looking like you’re solving problems.
At this point, the software industry is largely solving problems it created. Security tools are built to patch gaps left by other software. New frameworks emerge to fix inefficiencies of previous frameworks. And amidst all this, the cycle repeats: flashy problems get funding, real problems get ignored.
So, next time you hear about a groundbreaking security solution, ask yourself: Is it solving a real problem?
Or is it just another way to keep the funding wheel spinning?
